It's About Time

This "one-of-a-kind" sundial on the wall of the local Richardson Lodge Masonic Hall was unveiled and dedicated in June 2010, and commemorated 150 years as a Masonic Lodge.

It consists of a 6' x 4' granite slab supported by a column facing due south, and shows the time and the season.
I'm wondering about the significance of the quote "As Above, So Below".
Can you tell the time I was there with my camera?

  4. "As above so below" is an astrological phrase I have read often, Sham, while reading my books on the subject. It's about the grand play between the heavens and earth sharing one common space and being connected.

    Anyway, I love sundials! :)

  5. Hello Shammy! What a unique looking clock! Anyway, I'm back from my blog hiatus! :)

    Is it 11:10?

  6. I don’t know about reading this clock from a photograph - and not sure if I could read it anyway. I would say close to 1, but that is just a guess.

  7. I believe the expression dates from the Greeks and from the Egyptians, well before christianism, but possibly used also in present religions?

  8. I found Ginnie's explanation to be very interesting. Isn't it great, how blogging brings little bits of knowledge from your online friends?

I would have assumed that it was a paraphrase of a line from the Our Father, where Jesus taught his disciples to pray, "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven."

  13. the quotation is from Hermeticism. If you google this, you'll be fascinated. or at least interested.
it's an ancient philosophy/religion that enjoyed a resurgence during the Renaissance.

You find the most interesting things to take pictures of!!

  15. As above so below comes from the pagans (or perhaps earlier), referring to being one with Heaven and Earth.

  16. Could this sundial be a relative of the one on the Anglican church you showed us before? I saw the one on our church in Victoria yesterday, it is quite nice.
About everything.. yes you're right! At home, and a nice job playing for high tea at a certain landmark hotel :)

  17. Yes Wendy, the consultant for this sundial was Dr. Donald Petrie. Dr. Petrie was the designer of the Christ Church sundial. I'd like to add a little info to the blog. The dial is not on the wall, it stands on a 5' tall "T" post. A photo of the dial with a new plaque can be seen at richardsonlodge.ca. There is a small marker rowel about 10" from the top of the 'gnomon' which marks the time of year. The granite block weighs 3,300 lbs. There is a time capsule hidden below the sundial. It is designed for daylight savings time ET zone. The saying also has Masonic meaning.
